Cegeka University

Cegeka is one of the largest software development companies in the Benelux. The Cegeka Agile Software Factory is one part of our services offer. The ‘factory’ is composed of an analysis and a development team and operates according to the ‘best of practices’, based on the Agile Software Development ideas.

During the Ventouris project - an important assignment for Java development that represented more than 100 man-years - Cegeka has further refined those advanced techniques.

Cegeka continuously invests in the expertise of its staff. Staff members are offered intensive trainings to increase their technological know-how and their analysis techniques as well as their personal and methodological skills.
New and experienced team members of the ‘agile software factory’ can perfect their professional skills through lectures and hands-on workshops with leading industry experts.
A number of those workshops is also open to third parties.

On Tuesday, November 13th 2007, the Cegeka University opened

its first ‘academic year’ with an open workshop

Alef Arendsen gave a presentation on all the aspects that a developer has to take into account whilst selecting a framework for the presentation layer of web-based applications.

Alef Arendsen is a guru in the world of Java. He contributed to the development of the Spring framework and is co-author of the book ‘Professional Java Development with the Spring Framework’. He also manages the European branch of SpringSource (the former Interface21).
Today, Alef Arendsen is mainly active as a trainer ad consultant for large Java projects.

Sixty interested listeners, Cegeka employees as well as external visitors, attended this workshop.

Alef Arendsen’s opinion explained:

In the future, two kinds of frameworks will survive:

  • frameworks that store the state on the client (GWT, Flex) and that allow to build ‘rich’ clients
  • frameworks that store the state on the server (Spring MVC, Struts), mainly used if there are only few ‘rich’ client requirements.

Hybrids such as JSF are less optimal, and in the future their use will decrease.

Evaluation:
A short analysis of the evaluation forms showed that the audience did appreciate the workshop.
About 80 % were of the opinion that the workshop fully met the expectations.  In general, the quality of the presentation and the speaker’s knowledge transfer were judged to be well organized and very instructive. Cegeka employees were also found to attend the workshop with a critical mind.

Training Agile Project Management

On September 18th, Cegeka organized a second fully-booked training in ‘agile project management’. Johan Lybaert, Ilse Dierickx en Jan Van Reusel have successfully applied ‘Scrum’ and ‘eXtreme programming’ in various projects, such as the Ventouris project, the largest agile Java development in the Benelux.
After all, Cegeka wants to distribute its experience in agile project management. Therefore, we started to provide training in the application of this methodology to real-life projects.

Education KHLeuven –Health care and Technology Department

This academic year, Cegeka will give a brand-new course in “eXtreme Programming” at the Catholic University of Louvain. The final-year students of the information technology department get a unique opportunity to learn from the experience of IT captains. All the aspects of agile software development will be dealth with: agile project management, agile requirements engineering and agile software development. The course will be rounded off with a small project that will be developed using the new skills and in close collaboration with Cegeka developers.
